This week we hear from one of our Radiation Therapist members, Simon Lejcak.

What drew you to working as an Allied Health Professional?

Being able to give back and help people who are in need whilst using specialist technical knowledge in a challenging clinical environment.

What is the most important thing to you about being a union member?

A feeling that there is someone who has my back; someone who will stand up for me when things don’t feel right.

Have you had any ‘wins’ thanks to the strength and unity of the VAHPA members at your workplace?

As a delegate with the help of VAHPA we were able to get staff back-pay on overtime that was owed to them. We were able set in place a new system to ensure overtime was honoured into the future. This was an amicable discussion with all parties arriving to a common sense outcome.

What would you say to anyone thinking about joining VAHPA this year?

Why not? They care about you, care about your job and care about your career pathways. Plus let’s not forget the professional indemnity insurance and additional benefits [CPD for instance].

Finally, as we approach the start of the Football season, who do you barrack for and who is your prediction to win the Grand Final this year?

I’m an unlucky St Kilda supporter. I’m tipping Hawks for 2016
