Professional Indemnity Insurance

VAHPA provides a range of member benefits for Victoria’s Allied Health Professionals. Benefits include workplace advice, collective bargaining, professional indemnity, advocacy, free legal advice, plus other benefits and discounts.

Your Safety Net

As an Allied Health Professional your career is one of your biggest lifetime assets. At VAHPA we understand the importance of protecting your job and your career as an Allied Health Professional. That is why VAHPA provides members with professional indemnity insurance that you can rely on.

We have partnered with Austbrokers Countrywide to develop a package tailored especially to meet the needs of VAHPA members.

Under our policy, if you are a VAHPA member, you are protected from the cost of a claim made against you. Our safety net policy provides members with:

$20 million cover for Allied Health Professionals

We provide cover that is considered appropriate by regulatory bodies and it covers you to the level of risk for the full scope of treatments and practices that you are registered and qualified to perform as an Allied Health Professional.

Meets national registration requirements

Our insurance satisfies the requirements for Allied Health Professionals under the national registration standards of the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Authority (AHPRA).

No excess and no waiting period

In the event of a claim, you receive immediate assistance. There is no waiting period, no excess, no ‘deductibles’ and no charge for making a claim.

84 month run-off and retroactive cover

We provide run-off cover that protects you even after you retire with no ongoing costs and at no additional charge, for 84 months (7 years). Retroactive protection is also included for unknown events that may have occurred prior to you becoming a VAHPA member.

Working holiday extension

Our policy covers you for work anywhere in Australia and also includes an extension for Allied Health Professionals working overseas, except in the USA. This means that if you go to the United Kingdom on a working holiday you can keep up your VAHPA membership and retain the benefit of our Professional Indemnity Insurance.

Self-employment or contract work extension

Self-employed VAHPA Members, including those working as contractors, are covered by our PII. It is important to note however that there are limits to this form of PII protection. For instance, our PII applies to self-employed AHPs so long as the quantum of incomes earned through self-employment does not exceed $125,000 gross per annum.

Member Response Team

Should a claim be lodged against you our expert Member Response Team will help you every step of the way. Backed up by an experienced industrial and allied health professional team, we will guide you through the processes and support you along the way.

Full scope of treatments

Members are covered for the full scope of practice that you are registered and qualified to perform as an Allied Health Professional under AHPRA standards. For physiotherapists, this includes dry needling and for radiographers, cannulation.

Important

The policy will not cover dishonest criminal acts, fraud, fines and penalties that are imposed, or known circumstances of existing claims against members not disclosed when joining. Our professional indemnity insurance is:

  • Included with your membership – there is no extra cost
  • Free to claim with no excess
  • Inclusive of public and products liability and legal benefits
  • Underwritten by Lloyds
  • Specialty Insurance
  • Fully compliant with relevant professional registration boards

Your Disclosure
  • You have no known claims or circumstances, at the time of joining VAHPA, that may give rise to a claim.
  • You have a duty to disclose any relevant information that would lead to a potential claim or affect the insurer’s risk. If an incident occurs, you must notify VAHPA as soon as possible and VAHPA will lodge a notification with the insurer (members are not to send notifications directly to the insurer).
Isn’t my employer’s insurance enough?

While most employers carry indemnity insurance, but it is important to note that this cover does not necessarily protect you from a negligence claim. An employer’s insurer may sue an Allied Health Professional for acting outside the scope of normal duties so as to recoup their financial loss.
