VAHPA supports the Safe Schools Coalition and the fantastic work that they do; we encourage all members to show their support for the program by attending the community rally TODAY Thursday 10 March at 5:30 pm at the State Library.

Safe Schools is a program designed to tackle homophobia and transphobia in schools, and create safer educational environments for same-sex attracted and gender diverse students, their teachers and families. The program has been demonstrated to make a significant difference improving the lives of same-sex attracted and gender diverse young people.

“As a society, and as a union, we must do all we can to eradicate homophobia, whether it be in schools, on the sports field or in the workplace. We must promote acceptance and provide support for all people irrespective of sexual preference, gender dysphoria or any other basis for discrimination. This is an effective program and must be supported,” said Branch Secretary, Craig McGregor.

The program, the broader LGBTIQ community, and schools and teachers delivering the program, have all come under attack in recent weeks. Prime Minster Malcolm Turnbull has ordered an investigation into the program following attacks from SA Liberal Senator Cory Bernardi, Liberal MP George Christensen, the Australian Christian Lobby and right-wing media outlets.

This issue directly impacts on VAHPA members and their families, so we encourage members to, where possible, show your support for the program by attending the rally. If you would like to know more about actions you can take to support the Safe Schools program, please call VAHPA on 1300 322 917.
