There is a serious public health issue unfolding in the Latrobe Valley. The Hazelwood Open Cut Brown Coal Mine hasbeen burning for over 2 weeks. Smoke, ash and toxic carbon monoxide is blanketing the region with the town of Morwell being heavily affected.

Despite having up to 200 firefighters battling the blaze around the clock, the fire has grown to around 3km in length. Best estimates could be 2 weeks before the fire is merely under control. The local communities are calling for support and more to be done. The VHPA urges Dr Napthine to do the right thing and start providing the aid and assistance that is urgently needed.

A community protest is planned for this Sunday at 2pm at Kernot Hall in Morwell. As a serious public health issue, the VHPA is encouraging members in the region to show support by attending thispublic rally.
