COVID-19 Continues to Devastate Aged Care Facilities

Andrew Hewat, from the Victorian Allied Health Professionals Association, was recently interviewed by Channel 9 and has spoken out on the unrelenting impact of COVID on aged care patients and staff.

Right now there are outbreaks in 160 aged care facilities.

Hewat told Channel 9 “it is outrageous and it’s really unforgivable”.

But he stated there are ways to keep the elderly and staff safe – “…ventilation, masks, testing, isolation of staff when they’re positive and providing them with paid leave … when they are infectious.”  

Common sense measures that are not being adopted fast enough. Ahead of the festive season, the most recent Department of Health Surveillance report has shown an increasing trend of hospitalisations due to the virus.
