^ World Health Organisation

The World Health Organisation is providing regular updates about the COVID-19 pandemic as it unfolds globally.

^ The logic behind “flattening the curve”

Flattening the curve by slowing the rate of transmission of COVID-19 will ensure that our healthcare system is better able to cope with the number of concurrent cases.

It is inevitable that at some point, a significant number of people will contract COVID-19, regardless of what actions our governments take to limit the spread of the disease. If the number of concurrent cases becomes too large, however, the ability of our healthcare system to provide treatment to those who fall unwell becomes constrained.

However, if the number of new cases is stretched out over a longer period of time, our healthcare system is better able to take care of people as they become unwell. Hence it is important for all people to do their bit to limit the spread of COVID-19 by practicing good hygiene by washing hands regularly and thoroughly (for at least 20 seconds), practicing physical distancing (often referred to as social distancing) and, if possible, working from home.
