We understand the importance of protecting your job and your career as an Allied Health Professional. That is why VAHPA provides members with professional indemnity insurance you can rely on. We have partnered with PSC Insurance Brokers to develop a package tailored especially to meet the needs of VAHPA members.
Our professional indemnity insurance is:
- Part of your membership – there is no extra cost
- Free to claim with no excess
- Inclusive of public liability and legal benefits
- Underwritten by Lloyds of London
- Fully compliant with relevant professional registration boards
“In this age of litigation, just doing your job can get you in trouble. Professional Indemnity Insurance provides you with piece of mind and the security of knowing the union is there to back you up.” – Andrew Hewat, VAHPA Assistant Secretary
Under our policy, VAHPA members are protected from the cost of a claim made against you. Our safety net policy provides members with:
$10 million cover for Allied Health Professionals
We provide cover that is appropriate to the level of risk for the full scope of treatments and practices you are registered and qualified to perform as an Allied Health Professional.
Meets national registration requirements
Our insurance meets the requirements for Allied Health Professionals under the national registration standards of the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Authority (AHPRA).
No excess and no waiting period
In the event of a claim, you receive immediate legal assistance. There is no waiting period, no excess, no ‘deductibles’ and no charge for making a claim.
Unlimited run-off cover and retroactive cover for prior events
We provide run-off cover that protects you even after you retire. Retroactive protection is also included for unknown events prior to becoming a VAHPA member.
Working holiday extension
Our policy includes an extension for Allied Health Professionals working overseas, except in the USA and Canada. This means that if you go to the United Kingdom on a working holiday you can keep up your VAHPA membership and retain the benefit of our Professional Indemnity Insurance.
Self-employment or contract work extension
You are covered for your work as a contractor or self-employed Allied Health Professional provided your income from this source is below $100,000. Please contact us if you are over this limit and we will tailor insurance for you (additional charges apply).
Full scope of treatments
Members are covered for the full scope of practice you are registered and qualified to perform as a Health Professional under AHPRA standards. For physiotherapists, this includes dry needling and for radiographers, cannulation.
Are all VAHPA members covered?
As a safety net policy there are restrictions on eligibility and coverage. To ensure you are covered you need to:
- Keep your membership fees, employment details and contact details up to date (Associate Members and Student Members are not eligible for Professional Indemnity Insurance.)
- Ensure that any income you earn from self-employment (ie as a contractor) does not exceed $100,000 in a financial year
- Immediately disclose and report any circumstances that may lead to a potential claim
Isn’t my employer’s insurance enough?
While most employers carry indemnity insurance, it is important to note this cover does not necessarily protect you from a negligence claim. An employer’s insurer may sue an Allied Health Professional for acting outside the scope of normal duties so as to recoup their financial loss.
The policy will not cover dishonest criminal acts, fines and penalties that are imposed, or known circumstances of existing claims against members.
