Statement on Marriage Equality
VAHPA is a democratic community of Allied Health Professionals. We stand for fairness, equality and for an end to discrimination. Our LGBTIQ+ comrades, including VAHPA members and their families, are being discriminated against in the eyes of the law. The Marriage Act 1961 allows heterosexual marriage but, as a result of a 2004 amendment, unambiguously disallows same-sex marriage. This type of discrimination is damaging, unfair and unacceptable.
VAHPA is committed to the belief that all people, irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity, should have the right to access the civil institution of marriage with the partner of their choice. We call on the federal government to amend the Marriage Act 1961 to ensure that it provides equality for all Australians under the law.
VAHPA stands loudly and proudly in solidarity with our LGBTIQ+ comrades across the country.
