VAHPA is proud to have contributed to the newly erected statue of stalwart trade union activist, feminist and defender of equality, Melbourne born Zelda D’Aprano, which was unveiled at Trades Hall this week.
Zelda’s story is one of overcoming adversity and having the tenacity to boldly stand up to inequality, gather community support and establish neighbour based discussion groups that quickly turned to ideological and practical action. The Women’s Action Committee was established by Zelda and five other women in 1970 which led to the birth of the Women’s Liberation Movement in Melbourne, a milestone in our history.
Zelda’s life is a storied one, a recap of her achievements and struggles can be read here.
